What is AdBlue?
AdBlue® is a Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) used with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to reduce harmful emissions from diesel engines. It is not a fuel additive.
When injected into the exhaust system, AdBlue breaks down nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water vapour.
The name AdBlue® is a registered trademark of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), but it has become the most widely recognised form of DEF worldwide.
What is AdBlue made of?
AdBlue® is a high-purity solution consisting of:
- 32.5% urea of ultra-high purity
- 67.5% deionised water
It is colourless, non-toxic, and specifically formulated to meet the requirements of most modern diesel engines.
Is AdBlue compulsory in New Zealand?
Yes. The use of AdBlue® (or other DEF) is mandatory for many diesel vehicles in New Zealand, particularly:
- Heavy-duty trucks and buses
- Construction and agricultural machinery
- Diesel vehicles required to meet Euro 6 or equivalent emission standards
Requirements depend on the vehicle’s age, engine type, and emissions certification.
Does my car need AdBlue?
Not all diesel vehicles require AdBlue®. Generally:
- Most Jaguar, Land Rover, French and German diesel cars registered new after September 2015 use AdBlue®.
- Vehicles equipped with SCR technology require AdBlue to comply with Euro 6 standards.
Check your owner’s manual or fuel filler cap to confirm if your vehicle uses AdBlue®.
Can I still drive if I run out of AdBlue?
Your vehicle will warn you well in advance when the AdBlue® tank is low. If it runs out:
- Engine power will be reduced to limit emissions.
- Once stopped, the engine will not restart until AdBlue is refilled.
Regular refilling is essential to keep your vehicle running.
Can I refill the AdBlue tank myself?
Yes, you can. Most vehicles have an AdBlue® filler cap next to the diesel filler, under the boot floor, or under the bonnet. Simply unscrew the blue cap and top up.
⚠️ Important:
- Never pour AdBlue® into the diesel or petrol tank – this will cause severe and costly damage.
- If this happens, do not start the engine. Call roadside assistance immediately.
Safety Note: Although non-toxic, AdBlue® can irritate skin, eyes, and the respiratory system. Avoid contact and wash thoroughly if spilled.
Where is the AdBlue tank?
The AdBlue® tank location varies by vehicle model. Common locations include:
- Next to the diesel filler cap (with a blue cap)
- Under the boot floor
- Under the bonnet
Refer to your owner’s manual for the exact location.
How should you store AdBlue?
AdBlue® should be stored:
- In a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area
- Away from direct sunlight and dust
- Between -11°C and +30°C for optimal shelf life
Always keep the container sealed tightly when not in use.
